Lighting

Lighting is one of the key visual elements of a space.  It can have a huge impact on the feeling of a room, building or outdoor area.  Experience and creativity are very important in completing a lighting design.  Also, the complexity of today's energy and electrical codes mandate that a competent Electrical Engineer and lighting designer be consulted in most design projects.

To design lighting for today's projects, a lighting designer must follow several guidelines.  Some of these guidelines include:

• Energy codes now limit the wattage of lighting allowed in most buildings.
• Energy codes now require automatic controls for exterior spaces and building over 5,000 S.F.
• Many municipalities have implemented Dark Sky requirements that limit the type of exterior lighting and the amount used.
• Good lighting design is a careful combination of art and science.  No calculation can tell you how a fixture will look in a space and just selecting a light fixture based on looks is not a guarantee that the amount of light will be sufficient.
